Searching for a drinking water filtration system these days can be somewhat confusing because of all the different methods and different brands that are out there. You have to be somewhat careful about buying a system because some are very expensive yet inefficient.

The best thing for you to do is to do some research and find out what filtration systems are best for your home. You see if your home water system is hooked up to a public water line then you will not need a filtration system that does reverse osmosis because it will eliminate the minerals that are good for you.

You do need a drinking water filter system that removes chlorine, cancer-causing chemicals, microscopic parasites and lead. The cheap systems that you see in department stores, on TV and in magazine ads will only remove some of those things. There are several products on the market that only reduce chlorine.

Chlorine reduction is important, but wherever there is chlorine, there are chemicals that increase your risk of cancer. Studies indicate that exposure to THMs (trihalomethanes), present in chlorinated water, doubles your risk of bladder cancer.

There are a lot of people out there that are unaware that with these certain chemicals that are in your water, that these can be consumed through the pores in your skin while taking a shower. There also have been studies that say that when certain chemicals become airborne that you can inhale them as well.

You have to be very careful in the water you drink these days and you must make sure that you have something to protect your shower as well. Something that everyone should know is that if you drink not only tap water, but bottled water as well can contain microscopic parasites, cryptosporidium, and giardia. So it is very important that you get a system that is right for you.

You see most of the contaminants that are in the water supplies today are stopped. However, there are some that still reach our taps at our homes and those are the ones you have to worry about. People can consume these and survive rather easily with normal immune system, but someone with an underdeveloped immune system may not. The most recent case of someone being affected by the water they were drinking was in Milwaukee where there were thousands that were affected.

By the time the public was warned, it was too late. Facilities do not test for the parasites on a daily basis, so contamination can happen quickly without anyone being aware. The only way to be truly safe is to install a drinking water filter system that is certified to filter down to at least one micron.

When looking for a good system for filtering your water, you will want to make sure that you get one that is certified for "cyst" removal. If you are unfamiliar with what cyst is, it is a stage at which the parasites in your water are resistant to chlorine and can only be removed by filtration.

One of the first things you should do when buying a water filtering system is make sure that it has the Underwriter's Laboratory Certification. There are some products that are out there that have the WQA certification and if you are unaware of what it is, it is a trade group that houses specific members. So as you can see buying a water filtration system for your home is something that you should take into consideration, because it will save you hundreds of dollars over buying bottled water.
